For Oct 28

I am glad I said that!

OR

I wish I had said.........

If you participated in the discussion in class this past THU (Oct 23), tell us: what is the thing you said that you are proud or happy about?

("Prof. Carasi! What a sloppy way to ask a question!")

I agree. Let me try again. Today (THU Oct 23) we had a great discussion in class. Did you participate? Are you happy about your "performance?" Did you say something valuable? Were you able to articulate your thoughts the way you wanted? Are you happy about what you said?

Conversely, if you did not participate with comments: do you wish you had said something? WHY didn't you speak up (please, no excuses like "somebody else said what I wanted to say.") What were you about to say before you decided to keep quiet?

  1. I was not able to articulate my thoughts, that's why I didn't comment. However, I know that I did want to say that watching the film "Sacco E Vanzetti" gave me much more knowledge than my research on the topic.

  2. I was glad I commented on my research about Arturo Giovannitti and his connection to Mussolini. The professor talked more about how Mussolini had influence on political parties and was able to help Giovanniti on his defense in the jury. I did want to talk more about Sacco and Vanzetti movie but I don't recall if we mentioned anything about it.

  3. I did not share my ideas in class on Thursday because I prefer to listen and gather information. I listen to my classmates discuss their research and then I compare what I've researched in my head. It's not that I don't like to articulate or I am afraid to articulate, I just prefer to listen and analyze.

  4. Being the second person who wrote on the blog I had to comment in class. But I even after the research I did, I still did not know much about the person I had chose to write about. It was fine to add to the discussion but I was only willing to share the small amount of information I had. If I had elaborated on it more, it would have been a mistake.

  5. I spoke about my research on Arturo Giovannitti and what I found valuable about the research. I wish I had spoke about the film "Sacco E Vanzetti" and my opinions on the film itself. I didn't enjoy how much attention they put on the trial itself and not so much on Sacco and Vanzetti as individuals. Since our discussion was mostly focused on our research from the blog posts, talking about the film seemed irrelevant.

  6. I was glad that I kept my answer short. I was only able to say why I did the assignment option that I did, and it turned out to be a good reason. And I didn't have to say anything more. Absolutely fantastic.

  7. I did not participate in the class discussion, however I wish that I had contributed to what my classmates said. If I had participated I would have talked about the website that I used about Sacco and Vanzetti in my blog post.

  8. I am happy with what I shared in class. I do not believe I shared about the topic I did for October 23rd because I was a little confused. In class everyone was sharing the information they gathered from the website instead of how they felt the website’s information was, so I wasn’t sure as to whether or not I did the assignment right. But I did share when we were discussing women having the opportunity to freeze their eggs so they could focus on work instead of having kids. I could have articulated my thought better, but overall I was proud of my stance.

  9. I shared my ideas on Arturo Giovannitti and also the discussion we had towards the end on Facebook giving women the option to freeze their eggs. I'm always sort of outspoken but I am glad that I spoke up. I like defending my point of view and opinion, even if it doesn't have to do with the class itself. I wish we would've discussed the film more, since it was the first film I really enjoyed (I would even watch it if I wasn't taking this class).

  10. I wish I had spoken up in class on Thursday when the cartoon of the mafia men who "work" for Amazon, I do not feel that that cartoon is overly offensive. Although it paints the Italians into a certain stereotype, stereotypes carry some sort of truth or they wouldn't be in existence.

  11. I participated in the conversation in last thursdays class. I wish we had spoken about the movie more and maybe discussed as a class everyone's views on how Sacco and Vanzetti were treated. Also, I wish I had spoken up more when we were discussing the cartoon about Amazon. The professor said if it were gay men they would all be feminine, and if it were lesbians they would all be butchy. I took offense to that statement. I think that while the Amazon picture he showed can be perceived as racist, there are famous mafioso in history that can contribute to that cartoon. If the cartoon showed gay men or lesbian women, it would solely be contributed on the fact of stereotypes and homophobia. I don't feel that the two are the same at all.

    1. Either I did not express myself articulately enough, or we need some good faith effort to be clear. THE ur stereotype for ITAM is Mafioso. There are other ones: guido, pizza guy, momma boy, latin lover, etc. For gay people, the ur stereotype is the effeminate man: other types: leather, bear-otter, etc. The most common stereotype I am familiar with for a lesbians is "butch" although I am aware of other categories: softball player, 'femme" etc.
I clearly said that the cartoon referred to INTIMIDATION and REPRISAL, things for which mafia is known for. Using ITAMs for that purpose is racist. PERIOD.
I also made reference to stereotypes for African Americans and Latinos, for instance. To characterize any "social engagement construct" using ethic or gender stereotype is racist. PERIOD.
If you want, I can go further.

  12. I was not fully prepared for class so I was unable to form thoughts for my own comment, but I did listen to what everyone had to say.

  13. I didn't comment in class. I don't really like to speak aloud. I did understand the arguments made about facebook freezing the eggs of female employees, and other sexist ideals about the workplace. I remember seeing the cartoon you brought to our attention again. I do agree that it's racist, but when it isn't your race you tend to care less.

  14. I did not comment much in class on the 23rd. I was really hoping we would talk about the film we watched "Sacco E Vanzetti", but the conversation somehow led to women freezing their eggs for employment reasons. Though the conversation about this topic was very interesting and intrigued me, I wish we could of spoken about the film. I feel as though I should of spoke up and said what I wanted to talk about. So now I know for next time if there is something I want to comment on, I shouldn't be afraid to say something.
