  1. 1.“Job is freedom . . . for us.”
I chose this quote because it is packed with emotion. This quote shows the importance of being able to work and bring home money. Usually when I hear the word freedom, it doesn’t describe doing endless labor, or laying bricks all day. It describes having no worries or restraints. For Paul and his family, the only way they can be care free, or relaxed is through having a job. Without a job, they literally have nothing but their worries.

    2. “Paul looked over the scaffold rail and through staring mouth and eyes sent out his soul to catch his Godfather who flung out his arms and rested on the speed of space that sucked him down”
Although Nazone is falling to his death, I didn’t get a frantic or scared vibe from the description, it was almost peaceful. Nazone, who didn’t want to go to work that day, was finally free. As he falls he flung his arms out which I imagined it to be like an angel. He finally got a break from his endless work, he was able to rest on the speed bringing him down. Going along with the first quote I felt it was ironic, how work is freedom because you can get a living, but it is also freedom because it is what killed them and got them out of this world.

    1. "There is no God."
This quote by Louis the shows what happens when people have experienced an extreme loss or are placed in very difficult circumstances. I selected this quote because like Louis, Paul lost his father and because of this loss and the effects, his belief in God is not what it once was. He still feels a connection to the Church/God but the foundation on which it was on, has begun to weaken.
"Out! Out! The Lord's Paul is no more! Ah Jesu, give me the strength! My sainted son is dead! Dead! Dead! Ahh dead!' The connection between the two quotes is that Paul like Louis, has now lost his faith. The lost and endless hardship has sent Paul to cast his faith aside. To Paul if there was a God, he wouldn't of had taken Geremio from the family, nor he would have let his family suffer as they were. At this point Paul has become like Louis, he has lost faith in God and decides he and his family must face the face the world as it is, Godless.

  3. "The scaffolds rose a floor a day. With each floor the height and majesty of skyscraper fascinated him, but he never told mother Annunziata about the danger of falling or being pushed from a swinging scaffold forty or fifty floors above the street."
I chose this quote because it reminded me of Geremio. Geremio never told Annunziata of the dangers of his job because he didn't want her to worry and ask him to quit. The family depended on him for survival and he would endure anything for his family. Now was Paul's turn to endure for the survival of the family.

"Paul saw Jones' mad foot catch the tub and throw him into his godfather, pitching Nazone violently from the scaffold trowel in hand."
This quote describes what happened that lead to the death of Paul's godfather Nazone. This quote is linked to my previous quote because it was foreshadowed by the previous quote. Though Paul feared falling from the scaffold at job, it was his godfather who met his fate this way instead. Just like Geremio, Nazone has lived and died on the job.

  4. "He is a child and widow's son: soil not the purity of his mind."
This was said to Paul by Nazone. Nazone really wants Paul to be happy, pure, and innocent. This is shown through trying to help him and be there for him when he knows Paul is struggling on the job. Nazone and Paul have built a strong relationship and he just wants to see Paul be happy even though rough times are upon him.

"He who works, eats . He who does not work eats ,drinks and dances. Come,we who work with our hands can live a thousand centuries, and yet will we have to work." This is also said by Nazone. He was trying to get Paul to not attend Job today and go out and enjoy the beautiful day by the beach. This was something Nazone really felt would be a great thing for Paul but Paul didn't want to loose a days pay. These quotes show how Nazone cared for Paul's well being and experiences. He wanted Paul not only to focus on Job but to focus on the other things this life has to ofter during the young years of his life.

  5. 1. "Job is freedom...for us."
I chose this because Paul's job is the only thing letting their family live free from poverty, despite it being so hard on Paul. The line speaks a lot.
    2. "Paul shut his eyes, and when the terrible meaty quash sounded up to him it left him stunned and quaking uncontrollably."
Paul's job is hard enough and he has to deal with the constant fear of danger striking at any time. This happens when Nazone falls to his death and Paul becomes traumatized. Even if the job may be "freedom" for him and his family, it's a twisted kind of freedom.

  6. 1) "And what do you think came out of this woman who denied God?" I chose this quote because it stresses the importance that these immigrants placed on God and to never give up faith on him. It was a very recurrent theme throughout the story. So much so that in this particular anecdote, the story tells that the woman gee birth to a small demon child.
    2) "Out! Out! The Lord's Paul is no more! Out! Ah, Jesu give me the strength! My sainted son is dead! Dead! Dead! Ahh Dead!"
This quote connects with the previous one because it also emphasizes the importance and never wavering faith in God. Annunziata kicked her own son out of her house because he was blaspheming about God and Paul was questioning God's existence. these quotes connect to greatly emphasize how at all times, these people never lost their faith in God and put him before everything and saw him as the all powerful and end all by all

  7. “Have you seen God?” Paul felt something weakening him. “Louis-haven’t you-don’t you believe in God?” The gray eyes turned full on him “There is no God.”

This quote held so much significance because of how much religion is a key aspect in this book. These characters kept their faith after all of the hardships they have faced. Religion was their rock, they used it to bare the pain of their lives. Louis suffered a loss and has lost his faith, Paul seeing that and knowing the pain Louis feels, he starts to feel a spark of doubt. It's here that Paul begins to question his faith, Job was tested for his faith in God and so was Paul.

He pointed to the crucifix. “That’s a lie.” His words strangled her. “-Our Dio?” “What Dio and Dio!”

This quote shows that Paul has lost complete faith in God. That spark of doubt that started in FIESTA has now completely taken over. He no longer has any faith in God, he doesn't want to wait to be rewarded in the after life, he wants his dues now. His complete lost of faith is so shocking that Annunziata's reaction is almost justified because of how much she needs her faith to get by in her world. This quote proves how much the seeds of doubt can grow in a person and completely change their mind.

  8. “Has father seen? Is he watching? Has he been with me—does he know of my desire? Oh why am I tormented? Forgive me…”
I chose this quote because It’s showing Paul’s questioning of his faith. Paul doesn’t know what to do anymore and starts to really wonder if God is there watching him and being there for him.
“From the spirit would he tell me now over my shoulder that anything you have in your minds is something he and God has planted there and cause of that it is perfectly safe.. And everything is being done for the best…”
This quote has a great connection to the previous quote. Paul asked several questions many times. However, I think this quote, which was stated by the Cripple, was an “answer” to Paul’s questioning when he asked if father is watching him. He was being told that God and Geremio are indeed, both above him and that everything he’s going through is all for the best.
