Look at assignment n. 4 (due Sept 23).
In general do you find the guidelines helpful or overbearing? Do they help or hinder your spontaneity?
When you write your comment, please do not address me directly. Speak to your classmates, not to me.
1) Read your classmates comments first. If you find one that you agree with, write your comment mentioning the comment you liked. When you write yours, try to contribute with a different view point, or a differently-argued opinion. You can also mention a view point you disagree with and proceed with your opinion.
2) Leave a reply to the comment (if any) that inspired you to write your comment.
3) Return as often as you want and reply to other students' comments.
Sometimes I think the guidelines are a bit ridiculous and there should be no need for all of them. The guidelines do a little bit of both, they help and they hinder. Sometimes I feel as if I know exactly what I want to say, but according to the guidelines it would not be correct. So in that way, yes- I feel like it limits my expression. BUT! I do think they help as well. Sometimes I do not understand what Professor wants us to answer exactly and I have to read the question like 5 times, but after putting the question and guidelines/example topics together, it helps me understand and get my brain to start flowing
ReplyDeleteyes I agree ,sometimes I really have to read the set up more then 2 times because I don't want to mess up ..To many rules makes it to confusing
DeleteThe guidelines at times overwhelm me. Am I following what the Professor is asking for? Am I understanding what the Professor wants? With a few of the assignments, I've literally sat there and contemplated and tried comprehending what he was asking. However, those guidelines are surely a big help for me; they give me a brief so called "outline" of what I need to do. That helps my brain wonder and think more, as opposed to if the Professor gave us a reading or assignment and told us to answer a question that would be given.
ReplyDeleteI often find myself overwhelmed too, where I am just like I will come back to it later because I find myself lost with the instructions. But as you said I do find them being helpful
DeleteThe guildelines to an extent are fine to include. I think with all the work we have to do the professor should make it as clear as possible so it doesn't make us confused. Putting all these tips and reminders are in my opinion to much to watch out for when all were trying to do is answer it in the best way we can. I know I have problems with misunderstanding the professors assignment and it leaves me to have to email him.
ReplyDeleteGuidelines were meant to help clear up the assignment, to me the guidelines are hindering because they are simply not clear. We are asked to think a lot and write a little and to me that just does not make any sense. The guidelines should be made up to match the assignment that is wanted rather than, putting out a million ideas to go on. If we are suppose to be straight forward and to the point then the guidelines should follow that rule as well. I think there should be two sets of guidelines one that points out what should be written down and a set to think about , this way you can sort out your ideas.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with you on the think a lot write a little point. It makes the assignments so much more confusing!
DeleteI prefer guidelines. They give a specific aim for the assignment and allow me, personally, to get straight to the point and not wander off tangent. With guidelines I also tend to understand the purpose behind the assignment while offering how to structure it.
ReplyDeleteThat is how it helps me too! Structure is a nice way to put it. It definitely gives me a fair idea of what has to be done for the assignment.
DeleteAgreed! Without guidelines to help us structure the assignment, who knows what we would all end up writing about?
DeleteGuidelines in this case kind of go in hand with the question. Otherwise I may go off topic. With my dyslexia my mind can race all over the place and wonder off topic. With guidelines I have a tendency to stay on topic. However task #9 did confuse me a bit. I didn't know if I was to expand on a-d or just one of them.
ReplyDeleteI think the guidelines can be rather overbearing. If they were a bit more vague, I believe our assignments can be done more efficiently, even at the level desired.
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot what a lot of the previous post had to say. Sometimes the guidelines are too much. Like when I start reading the task I get a really good idea but the more I read the less I get it. Sometimes I do find myself reading the guidelines multiple times, just to be clear. But other times the guidelines fulfill its purpose, and actually guides me in the right direction which I probably wouldn’t have reached without them.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the descriptive guidelines. I would be even more confused as to what the Professor really wants if the task was explain in a less structured way. With that being said, it is with the guidelines that I find myself confused at times
ReplyDeleteI find guidelines to be helpful in terms of structuring the assignments but as far as content, I do find them a little bit hindering. I think for any type of writing assignment, guidelines are definitely important so that we all stay on similar pages in terms of what to include but, if these writing tasks are supposed to be anything like journal entries (not saying they are), they lack spontaneity and originality. Each guideline we've received so far steers us in a certain direction and because of that, our writing may not actually reflect our own opinions, but rather what we're expected to think about each thing we're assigned.
ReplyDeleteI complete agree with everyone, the instructions can be very overwhelming. I like the questions that are given to help get our thoughts going but then the instructions make me lose my originality and train of thought. I get so frustrated following the instructions I end up writing for the professor instead of giving my own opinion. Since such specific things are asked of us I can't focus on my thoughts, I end up worrying if my writing is good enough and if it meets the proper standards.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Cheyenne said, the guidelines force you to think about certain aspects of the content. Those aspects may not have been on your mind at all. When that happens your response will be much shorter than expected because your mind was elsewhere. On the other hand the guidelines let you know what is considered important information from the content, but I think overall they just make you have to write more than you intended to because a lot of the time you are looking back and forth trying to make sure you answered every question.
ReplyDeleteI find that guidelines work both ways positive and negative . It helps us decide what to write and help us decide what is correct and what is not but it also
ReplyDeletePrevents us from writing certain things
ReplyDeleteGuidelines help instruct you on what exactly is being asked of you in a given task. They tell you how to get something done. At times they can become overbearing when there are too many. Guidelines both help and impede ones progress. When I receive an assignment or task 9 out of 10 times I know what I want to write about but guidelines sometime throw my train of thought off but they also help me to adapt to any topic.
ReplyDeleteI think that the guidelines help with the assignments that are not too clear, however for the most part, I feel like the guidelines make me more confused. As Cathy Maltese said, it's very confusing when we are told to think a lot, but write a little. It makes me confused as to how to get my thoughts together and which thoughts exactly I should write down and shouldn't.
