1) First, comment on any DETAIL (not the main topics) of last class that stuck with you.

Seeing the cartoons the professor put up about Obama is something that I remember from class. It really struck me that people can be that mean even if it's in the form of a joke.
ReplyDeleteOne tiny thing that stuck with me was how the class was quiet when the professor asked about the dates of the civil war. I enjoyed the video of the 5 minute college degree. Also talking about the LIRR shooting. As some who rides the LIRR four days a week I try not to think about that shooting. But it's always in the back of my mind.
ReplyDeleteWhat stuck with me the most was the quiz, it wasn't what I was expecting. I realized I need to retain the information better so that I may be able to answer any questions on the assignments or reading.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked seeing those cartoons of Obama in class. That is definitely what stuck with me the most. Everyone has their critics and their fans, but I didn't know that people portrayed Obama the way he was shown in those cartoons.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I was completely in shock that someone would view another person like that. Regardless of it was Obama, they have to view others as that as well.

ReplyDeleteThe Youtube video featuring the priest was a comical outlook on College and it really does have a sense of realness in which people actual retain after College.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought too! It really is always hard to remember everything you learn in classes. Only the interesting classes stick with you.
DeleteTwo things resonated with me after class was over on Thursday. One thing that stuck with me was the meaning behind the word Paddy wagon. I never thought into the etymology of the word before that day, and I also never thought it had a never meaning behind it. The second thing that stuck with me was how you said when there is a crime you can tell what race a person is just by the description: a white man who is a serial killer would be called a monster in interviews whereas a black man would be called an animal. This stayed with me because it is one of those you do not really think about, but language has power and there is a big difference between someone being an animal and a monster.
ReplyDeleteI wrote about the same thing! The word "animal" also stuck with me and I also agree that a white person would never be referred to as that. It really puts into context that even though statistics show that white males mostly commit these mass shootings, it's Hispanics and Blacks that we refer to as "animals"
DeleteThe Obama-comics that were showed to us really stuck to me. It's such a modern time and still we have such racism that exists in the world. Most of the time it seems as if we've almost done away with it. The Obama-comics were a reminder that racism still exists.
ReplyDeleteI have also mentioned that the President Obama cartoons stuck with me. You added on that during the modern time day, we still have racism that exists. Whether it's said through a protest, hate crimes, or what one thinks to himself about another culture and ethnicity; there definitely is racism occurring.
DeleteThose comics stuck with me as well! No matter how far we think we've come from history, history will always repeat itself. It saddens me to think that there are still people out there who put African Americans or any race really into a category filled with negativity and hate. But no matter what, I think it will always exist.
DeleteWhat stuck with me the most from last class was when Professor Carasi talked about the shooting that occurred on the Long Island Railroad and how someone being interviewed referred to the suspect as an "animal", which clearly meant he was talking about an African-American. Although most shooters are white, like the professor previously stated, we would only refer to a Hispanic or Black as an "animal". Although this is something I was previously aware of, I never really put it into context until he brought it up in class.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I did not write about this, it also did stick with me after class. With everything that has been going on in Ferguson and also in Staten Island, it really makes you think about how racism is still a major issue today.
DeleteThe first thing I can remember from the second day of class is the quiz. It wasn't much of a quiz in my eyes, there was only one question that really required a thought out answer. A few people missed the quiz. The video on the 5 minute university was entertaining. I'd like to believe I will know more when I graduate. I haven't taken any Spanish since high school, but I'm proud to say I know more than, "Como estas. Muy bien."
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that when I graduate I would love to retain more than just the very basics. the video was funny, and it did have good points like how we forget a lot of what is taught to us. I can also proudly say that i remember more than just "como estas, muy bien" from my hs Spanish class
DeleteWhat really stuck with me the most about the second day of class is our discussion on the cartoons. When I first opened the attachment of the cartoons last week, I wasn't really sure how to portray them and what exactly I was looking at. When the professor went through the cartoons went us, I began to understand what they meant one by one. I was able to make better notes on the cartoons and feel as though I can have a deeper and better discussion on them.
ReplyDeleteThe video we watched about the "5 minute college degree" was very entertaining. I'm actually excited to watch more videos in this class.
ReplyDeleteThe major thing that stuck with me is the "5 mins college"video. At first, I thought it was only a funny video that dig at the education system. As the video goes on, however, I think it was kind of realistic.
ReplyDeleteI missed class on Thursday but I followed up and saw all of the cartoons on the website. That stuck with me, I can't believe people really portray Obama like that, or how anyone could see another person like that
ReplyDeleteWhat I remember from class was when professor Carasi was going over how to write in a specific format and also how to take good notes.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that stuck with me was the Five minute college video, I found it hilarious maybe since I agree with most of what was said.
ReplyDeleteI thought the college video was funny also. I even went home and showed my girlfriend and my friend. I was laughing the whole time. It's so funny yet so true.
DeleteThe one detail from our last class that stuck with me is actually the Five Minute University clip that we watched from Youtube. It stuck with me because although this skit was intended for humor, Father Guido Sarducci's ideas are absolutely truthful. As students, we learn so much in our time at college but really, only a few things resonate enough with us to actually stick and last past graduation. Those things can be from our actual courses, things that professors say while their randomly ranting or even things we learn through our personal experiences with our peers. Not everything we learn in college or life will stick with us past a certain time but, if we take at least 5 minutes worth of information/experiences away from college, it was worth it.
ReplyDeleteSomething that stood out to me last class was the explanation of the "Patty" wagon. Is it me or do people think racism is a "black thing" cause that was so racist, and we still use that term! It just made wonder if modern day American-Irishmen and woman knew would they still feel comfortable or is it one of those things that we should just get over and look beyond? This country was built on immigrants and built on hating them. This class is clearly going test my patience when it comes to ignorance but I digress.
ReplyDeleteThe video with Father Sarducci stuck out the most. He was pretty funny. A 5 Minute University should be a thing.
