FOR THU SEPT 18

Which aspect of this week's assignments are worth mentioning here , either because you 'liked' them or because you 'disliked' them?

  1. I really enjoyed watching the silent video "Skyscrapers of New York." I've always wanted to see videos of how they built bridges and skyscrapers, I just never did my research on it. With it being silent, it really made me concentrate on what they were doing, therefore making me feel like I was actually there during that time with them.

  2. I actually enjoyed reading the first half of "Son of Italy". The author seems to be a natural writer. Though obviously its an autobiography, his writing is almost effortless.

  3. I actually really enjoyed the silent movies "The Italian" and "The Black Hand" a lot more that I thought. Watching a silent movie that was over an hour long scared me but as the movie progressed I really enjoyed it. The Son of Italy was also really great, it was hard to imagine that it was an autobiography written in the 1920s.

  4. I enjoyed watching the The Italian and the black hand and i recently just viewed another film also showing what the black hand did in the 1920s by extorting other Italians and terrorizing them

  5. The assignment where we had to share a part of Son of Italy that stuck with us was a good idea because after reading the part about the witch I couldn't get it out of my head and I used that assignment as an opportunity to figure out why.

  6. I very much enjoyed reading Son of Italy, well the first couple of chapters. I found it to be very interesting and enjoyed writing about the part that stuck with me the most. I hope we have a discussion about what we read in class, so I can share my thoughts and to also hear other opinions on the book so far.

    2. It came on strong for me in the beginning. I found that I was really pushing myself to continue but once I got to the part where the man got shocked by lighting, the witch and reading that he wants to go to America made me feel more optimistic about reading the book. I want to find out how he deals with going to America.

  9. I enjoyed reading Son of Italy. At first I was very hesitant about the book, but once I started reading it, I realized its actually quite a good book. I do however think that the work load for things due every week is quite a lot. I am a senior, and I'm taking 5 classes, none of which are very easy. Between working and the work load I have just from taking the classes, I find myself up late in the night finishing the homework for this class

  11. The films were really good to my surprise. At first I was not happy about watching a silent film. I like when I can hear voices and the tones of peoples voices. In this case they actually did not need to speak for me to know what was going on. The acting was great!. All the note taking was a bit much just because there was a lot of stuff we had to take notes on,on top of doing the other assignments. I enjoyed the little information I wrote about the task for My Immigrant Experience and look forward to continuing it.

  12. I did not enjoy "Son of Italy". I was surprised that my classmates had so much to say about it because I personally did not enjoy it. I found that the writing was a bit dry and lacked smooth transitions in both the sentence structure as well as thought. While there were moments of empathy for me, I found it very difficult to read and stay actively engaged.
