  1. Why does the movie begin very silly but then darkens and becomes serious? I'm glad the sillines was brought back for the last scene.

    1. I noticed this too in the movie. In the beginning, there were many scenes that I found funny but as the movie progressed it began to become more serious. I also enjoyed the love story very much.

  2. Why was the man at the immigration station so mean to Peppino when he was trying to get the stamp? Also why did the man say it would be easier for Peppino to get to America if he was a women? Wasn't all the jobs in America hard labor jobs that only asked for men?

    1. The agent was working for the Italian government. Peppino wanted an exit visa to leave the country but first he had to serve in the armed forces ("conscription.".) Women didn't have that obligation.

  3. I liked the fact that it went back and forth between being funny and being serious. It took a serious situation and shed some light on something as grueling as coming all the way to America in hopes of finding his dad and living a better life. Was it done this way to make it more intriguing for the viewer?

    1. I enjoyed that too! I liked that there was some humor on top of the seriousness, it made the film much easier and enjoyable to watch.

  4. If Peppino never had a dream of his father, would he ever leave Italy and go through everything he went through to search for his father? When he found out his father died ten years earlier, do you think he regretted not searching for his father sooner?

    1. I like your question. I got so lost in the movie that I forgot his voyage began because of a dream. I doubt he would have left Italy if he never had that dream. I'm sure he regrets not searching for his father sooner, but ten years ago he would have been 14 years old and I'm not sure if he would've been able to survive on his own at that age.

  5. I liked how some of the comedic parts of the film had lines delivered so well. Like when Peppino and his mom are discussing his departure and she pleads for him not to mention to his father that she married and had children with another man, Peppino says something along the lines of "Of course I won't say anything, otherwise he would think poorly of you" and she's just like "wat"

  7. Why is it ok for Rosita and Peppino to make love in the meadows? Is that not against the law? Or is it overlooked because it's "romantic"?

    1. What I find interesting is that they even included a scene like that, considering sex is a very touchy subject and even more touchy is the fact that a woman pushed about having sex. There was also the American woman who was very sexual.

    2. What I noticed most about that scene is that they kept looking for the perfect spot. Not to be blunt, but let's be honest, people nowadays wouldn't waste that much time finding the "perfect spot to make love". But to Peppino, it had to be perfect.

  8. To me the story was a bit patchy at times. Also I considered it more of a drama then a comedy. I think I only really chucked twice watching it. I can only really think of three funny scenes, when he is discovered for being a man, the bucket on his foot, and when he is driving the car. Did anyone else see this as a more of a drama then a comedy?

  9. Italian immigrants in America were well known to be part of mobs and related to violence. In the beginning of the movie I did not think that Peppino would join Don Nikolone and his men. I thought Peppino would stay focused on finding his father, for that was the reason he went to America. Do you think Peppino was wrong for joining Don? Especially after finding out that it was Don who killed his father?

  10. Do you think Peppino's father would've been proud of the person Peppino became once he joined Don? I think his personality changed throughout him moving to America and then joining Don and neither of his parent's would've been proud of him. Not so much because it was Don but just the person he became once he started making more money.

    1. I like this question because it can lead to a debate.
I disagree with your response I feel like although his personality did change it wasn't in such a drastically negative way that his parents would have been disappointed. I feel as though they would've been happy for how much he progressed in America which is something really hard for immigrants to have done

  11. Do you think there was more to Rosita than just an object of Peppino's affection? Could her character be symbolism for something in American society like a characteristic, or a criticism or is she just a character with no meaning to it?

    1. I think Rosita's character represents the typical immigrant who tries really hard to not seem like an immigrant. When you think about it, they both came to America on the same boat and as Don puts it, nothing was guaranteed for Rosita. I just think she always held herself at a "higher standard".

  12. Does Peppino's role reversal symbolize that we all end up becoming who we never thought we'd become when moving to America, or even so, transitioning through life and maturing?

  13. What do you think of Toni's role in the movie? Do you think there is something more to the fact that the director made Toni so poor and always having problems, or you do think that's just how anarchists were back then?

  14. Why does Rosita tell the don to help pepino with the authorities when he gets of the boat

  15. For coming to America alone with no money, do you think Peppino overall did a good job surviving in America? Does he fit the stereotypical immigrants we have learned about?
