Marty was a very funny and cute film. I found the story and the idea that two people who didnt believe in love were able to find love and turned their boring lives into better ones. The film showed such accuracy of two average people who lost sight of the happiness people could experience in life. The plot is fairly simple, but the film is very well written and directed greatly. I also chose this movie because the main actor Ernest Borgnine was an actor I recongized by his voice of mermaid man in spongebob (not ashamed to say it ) and also from the movie the Poseidon Adventure from 1972.
ReplyDeleteYes and he won an Oscar for his Portrayal of Marty.
DeleteI thought Marty's story was well done, but it did seem a bit too short. I know they really like each other, but what about after? It was simple, though I thought that the parts with their Aunt Caterina moving in and Virginia and Thomas's subplot was unnecessary.
DeleteAlso wow, I didn't realize he was Mermaid Man's voice actor. They even look alike!
TRUE LOVE is a great movie that was both comedic and dramatic when necessary. Given all of the movies we watched in class so far, TRUE LOVE gives us a representation of Italian Americans in a much different, more realistic way, revolving around younger people dealing with real issues like immaturity, dysfunction and unhappiness. I think it's worth seeing because even though it came out in the 80's, it deals with a lot of topics that we (this generation) can relate to today. I also loved that it contrasts the representation of men and women that we see in films like The Godfather which represent men as being the strong, dominant ones and the women being less so. The women in this film are the mature, level-headed ones and the males are not. I also love that even though it's called TRUE LOVE, it doesn't have a very conventional, happy ending. The acting is not the greatest but, I still think it's worth seeing for the plot and the representation of Italian American young adults. If you love 80's movies, you will definitely enjoy this one.
ReplyDeleteI agree True love was a good movie. I also saw the drastic change in gender roles in this movie. The "men" in this movie were more like boys and the women were much more responsible. You could also see more independence in the women. Donna's friend was planning to move out of her parent's home with her little sister to get her out of a bad environment. Her parent's were heavy drinkers. Another one of her friends seemed to be a student and was studying frantically many times.
DeleteI really enjoyed “Kiss me, Guido”. Yes, it was a little racist, but I’ve seen worse. I thought it was a great movie about relationships and tolerance. With overcoming the things you are not used to and accepting lifestyles of different people, you will be able to reach your goals and reach happiness. Multiple characters had several goals within the movie, and with stepping out of their comfort zone, they achieved them. I really admired Frankie’s character in film, he was able to do things that a lot of other men might not be okay with. I think the story line and message the movie gives off is pretty great. I would recommend this film to others, it is a comedy, a bit sexual, and of lot of foul language but that is nothing we aren’t used to. I spent my Saturday morning watching this film and I think it did a good job of keeping me entertained.
ReplyDeleteI also found "Kiss Me, Guido" to be an entertaining movie. I appreciate the fact that it was a little bit more edgy in terms of its content. In our society most people will not cover subjects that can cause controversy but it took the chance and I feel that it made it fun and lighthearted and an overall fun movie. It had comical points but at the same time touched on the different characters striving for their goals and by taking chances, finding success and acceptance.
DeleteI did enjoy Frankie's character too. Regardless of what he had gone through throughout the movie, he still achieved some of his goals; such as getting an apartment with a roomate and being an "actor" in a play.
Delete"Kiss Me, Guido" does a fine job allowing the audience to observe what it was like to be an Italian man living in the Bronx, New York in the 1980's. Although I can see how some people may find the film racist and some even state that it generalizes over a certain culture, I think it does a fine job explaining to the audience that not all Italians are the same and you can change your views. The director isn't biased in my opinion since even the homosexuals fear "mingling" with the heterosexuals. Overall, I thought the film delivers a great message of equality and tolerance, panting a picture of present day New York City, with so many people with different beliefs and rituals all coinciding under one borough.
DeleteI highly recommend watching the film "Kiss Me, Guido". I enjoyed it for the fact that it was much different from previous films that we have watched in this class. It takes place in more recent times, which helped me to relate more to the racism and stereotypes that Italian Americans faced. I found the film to be very entertaining and enjoyed both the character of Frankie and Warren.
DeleteKiss Me Guido” wasn’t what I initially expected, but it was a great refresher. This was a perfect comedy: it was funny, tacky, and fresh. There was some foul language and a lot of stereotypes but overall it was an excellent movie, and I would recommend it. As said by my classmates, this film isn’t like anything we’ve watched this semester; it was edgy and modern. It was a great refresher and a great way to end the semester.
DeleteI really enjoyed the movie as well, all the stereotypes in the movie were beyond exaggerated but I think it was all for a purpose. The director was trying to get a message out about acceptance even if you're a "guido" or homosexual in a very comical way. I did a lot of laughing watching this movie. My favorite part of the movie is Pino's walk.
DeleteI watched Marty and besides the heavy accents of his mother and aunt I thought it was a good watch. Even the fact that it was just a factious movie, I did feel bad for him in the beginning with every harassing him about not being married.
ReplyDeleteI think "Kiss me, Guido" was racist. I did greatly enjoyed it though. The background music that played throughout the movie was very upbeat, therefore, making me way more interested in watching it. I also paid a lot of attention to the way the "gay" topic was portrayed. Seeing Frankie disagree to move in with Warren just because he was gay, surprised me. I think now, times have gotten a bit better regarding "gays" and "lesbians." I would recommend this movie to others. In fact, I had my two friends watch it too. It was fairly funny and entertaining to watch.
ReplyDelete"Marty" was a great film, I really enjoyed that it was old fashioned. I liked the way Marty was an older fella who lived with his mother and was formally traditional in the way he did things. His friend Jerry added some humor to it by antagonizing Marty every chance he got. I usually don't like watching romantic movies but this was an exception. The closing scene was my favorite because the table have turned and Marty was mocking Jerry by telling him that he should be ashamed of himself and asking when was he gonna get married, priceless. "Kiss me, Guido," had a hip cheery feel to it. I sensed they might've went a little overboard with the homosexuality but I understood why they chose to go that route, after all it was a movie. I especially like the part when Frankie was picking up his things from home and his brother gets up from the dinner table and his grandmother picks up the bone off of his table and starts chowing down, reminds me of my grandmother. Both movies are definitely worth watching as they will uplift your spirits with comedy and appeal.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend the movie Marty. I really enjoyed it, Marty seems like he's one of the good guys. The only problem is that the movie ended unexpectedly. I expected to see more of how it ended with him and Clarise. Also of what happened with the butcher shop.
